UFC St Petersburg Preview

The UFC will return to Russia for the second time with a Heavyweight showdown between Alistair Overeem and Aleksei Oleinik headlining the card. It also features a women’s flyweight bout between Antonina Shevchenko and Roxanne Modafferi who will battle it out this weekend in the city of St Petersburg, Russia.

Originally scheduled to face Alexander Volkov, Former Strikeforce champion and Dutch kickboxer Alistair Overeem will now take on no 9 ranked Heavyweight Aleksei Oleinik. Oleinik, a Ukrainian born Russian, is on a two fight win streak with both wins coming via 1st round submission earning him two performance of the night bonuses.

His opponent Alistair Overeem is coming off a recent 1st round TKO win in Beijing back in November. This win put him back in the win column after suffering two ferocious stoppage losses by the hands of Curtis Blaydes and Francis Ngannou. Now training at Elevation Fight Team in Colorado, Overeem will be looking to make it two in a row with a back to back win this weekend.

Alistair Overeem enters this bout with knock out power, but he must be wary as a fight with Oleinik rarely makes it out of the second round. He will want to avoid failing victim to another one of Oleinik’s Ezekiel chokes.

Also featured on this card is a women’s flyweight bout between Antonina Shevchenko and Roxanne Modafferi. Antonina, the sister of women’s flyweight Champion Valentina Shevchenko is currently undefeated with a record of 7-0. An experienced Muay Thai fighter, she makes her third UFC appearance since debuting on the contenders series back in June last year. Modafferi on the other hand holds the most experience inside the MMA cage with a total record of 22-15. She competed in two Ultimate fighter series and has gained experience in both the UFC and Invicta FC. Modafferi will look to get back in the win column but will be met with a tough test in Antonina Shevchenko.
