UFC 208 goes down this weekend, headlined by the former UFC Woman’s Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie. The pair will battle it out for the first UFC Women’s Featherweight title.
Holly Holm vs Germaine De Randamie
A new woman’s 145lbs division has been added by the UFC. With a 115lbs and 135lbs division already in existence, this division will make way for new talent and talent previously struggling to make the 135lbs mark. With Cyborg Justino currently out of action due to a potential anti doping violation, the UFC looked to former boxing champion, Holly Holm and former kick boxing champion, Germaine De Randamie.
Holly Holm is perhaps now most known as the one who dethroned the long reining UFC Bantamweight Champion and Hollywood star Ronda Rousey. In what was a completely dominant performance, Holm picked Rousey apart and shocked the world by knocking out the UFC darling in one of the biggest upsets to date. But her rein as the new champion didn’t last long, with her first title defence against Miesha Tate finishing in the fifth round by a submission. She lost the belt and went on to loose her next bout against current number one contender Valentina Shevchenko at UFC on FOX 20 this past July. She now has another shot at gold as the first to fight for the new women’s 145lbs title.
Having fought at multiple weight divisions during her pro boxing career, this will be an opportunity to be the UFC’s first women’s two division champion. But first she must get past ‘The Iron Lady’ Germaine De Randamie.
Just like Holm, Germaine switched over to MMA later in her fighting career and made the switch in 2008 after competing and winning multiple titles in Kickboxing. Hailing from the Netherlands, renowned for Kicking boxing, de Randamie is also no stranger to competing in different weight divisions. ‘The Iron Lady’ made her UFC debut in 2013 winning by split decision before loosing to the current UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Amanda Nunes by first round TKO. Since then, De Randamie has gone on to win her next two bouts both by TKO within the second round. She is looking to make her mark in the UFC as she attempts to be the first UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion.
Both Women are high level and highly decorated strikers and we will no doubt see this championship fight take place for the most part on the feet. Being a former UFC Champion, Holm has more experience in five round title fights but that may not matter to De Randamie as half of her wins have come via stoppages within the second round. Sports Betting Dime has Holm as the favourite, but either way history will be made at UFC 208 with the first UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion.
Anderson Silva vs Derek Brunson
In the co-main event, UFC legend Anderson ‘The Spider’ Silva will take on No. 8 ranked Middleweight Derek Brunson.
The former UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva has not had much success recently after returning from a PED suspension. He lost in a controversial fight against the current UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping and then in a short notice fight against the current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 200.
Derek Brunson is coming off a first round loss to Robert Whittaker at UFC Fight Night 101, which put a stop to his five fight win streak. The explosive striker has finished his last four wins all by TKO in the first round. Anderson will have to avoid the knockout power of Brunson to get back in the win column and for Brunson, a victory over a legend and former champion will do wonders for his career and help to push him up into the top five of the division.
UFC 208 takes place live this Saturday from the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York.
