Cleveland’s very own UFC Heavyweight champion, Stipe Miocic defends his belt for the very first time this Saturday at UFC 203 against Alistair Overeem.
The champion (15-2-0) has been on a tear since losing by decision to the former champion Junior dos Santos back in December 2014. Since then he has finished all three of his next opponents by TKO/KO, with the most recent being an impressive 1st round KO of Fabricio Werdum in Brazil, earning him the ultimate prize of that UFC Heavyweight belt.
The challenger Alistair Overeem (41-14-0) a former Strikeforce champion however is on a four fight win streak. This win streak includes two 2nd round TKO’s, one of which being a TKO of his fellow Jackson’s ‘Team mate’ Andrei Arlovski.
With just a couple of days out from this bout the Champion Stipe Miocic remains the favourite to retain his heavyweight belt according to this site. However Overeem will do everything in his power to bring the belt back to Europe with him.
Also on this card is one of the most anticipated debuts in MMA history. The former WWE professional wrestler, CM Punk (real name Phil Brooks) takes on Mickey Gall on the main card. Since being signed to the UFC back in Dec 2014 Punk has spent time training and preparing for his first MMA fight at Roufus Sport, home to former champion Anthony Pettis. He takes on Mickey Gall (2-0) who was discovered on the show ‘Dana White Lookin for a fight’. Having finished off his first opponent by Rear Naked Choke 0:45secs into the 1st round in his UFC debut, Gall is not surprisingly the favourite in this bout.
In the co-main event Fabricio Werdum will take on Travis Browne in a rematch and even though the Punk vs Gall fight somewhat overshadows the rest of the card, there is no doubt that the outcome of the main and co-main event bouts will have big implications in the ever changing heavyweight top 5.
