The UFC have announced that title contender Demian Maia will take on the UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley at UFC 214.
Demian Maia (25-6) is coming off a recent split decision win over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 211 this May earning him the next shot at the title. Maia is currently on a seven fight win streak with wins over Carlos Condit, Matt Brown and Gunnar Nelson. Three of this most recent wins have come via rear naked choke with twelve total wins on his record coming by submission.
Tyron Woodley (17-3-1) gained the UFC Welterweight title in 2016 when he knocked out the former champion Robbie Lawler in the first round at UFC 201. Since then Woodley has retained his title first with a draw decision over Stephen ‘wonderboy’ Thompson and then defeating him by majority decision in the rematch at UFC 209.
This fight has been added to an already stacked UFC 214 card which will take place at The Honda Centre in Anaheim, July 29. Headlined by Daniel Cormier vs Jon Jones, this card will feature three title fights.
The returning former champion George St Pierre has also been announced to take on the winner of Woodley vs Maia.
