It has been confirmed that UFC welterweight Champion Robbie Lawler will defend his belt against contender Tyron Woodley in the main event at UFC 201.
UFC Welterweight Champion Robbie Lawler has an MMA record of 27-10 and 1 no contest. He has a UFC record of 12-4 and has defended his Welterweight belt twice against Rory MacDonald and most recently Carlos Condit. He won the title at UFC 181 when he defeated Johny Hendricks by split decision. This was the second time the pair had met and Lawler had been unsuccessful the first time at UFC 171 when he lost by decision for the vacant title. This was Lawler last loss and has since been on a 5 fight win streak. His recent title defences have both seen him in 5 round wars that have both earned him fight of the night. His fight against Rory MacDonald went down in history as the fight of the year for 2015.
Tyron Woodley has an MMA record of 15-3 and a UFC record of 5-2. He is coming off a 2 fight win streak with wins over Dong Hyun Kim and most recently against Kevin Gastelum. His last loss was to Rory MacDonald at UFC 174 when he lost by decision. Woodley was expected to fight Johny Hendricks last October but the fight was cancelled due to Hendricks having complications with weight cutting. Woodley has sat out since then in hopes of the next title shot.
This event will take place at The Philips Arena in Atlanta, July 30th.
