The UFC have confirmed that Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson will go head to head for the UFC Interim Lightweight Title in the co-main event at UFC 209, March 4th.
The fight had been verbally agreed up to now with a Twitter battle between the two Lightweights going on for weeks prior.
Khabib Nurmagomedov (24-0) is currently undefeated and is coming off a third round submission win over Michael Johnson back at UFC 205. Khabib had been scheduled to face Tony Ferguson twice before but both fell through first to Khabib being injured and then to Ferguson. Ferguson was replaced the second time round by Darrell Horcher which saw Khabib win the bout by second round TKO at UFC on FOX in April last year. Khabib came close to a title shot, signing a contract to face the champion at the time, Eddie Alvarez but was was pulled in favour of Alvarez vs McGregor instead. Khabib called out the current champ Conor McGregor after his last win at UFC 205 but he will now get a chance to get one step closer with the opportunity to gain the UFC Interim Lightweight belt.
Tony Ferguson (22-3) is coming off a decision victory over the former UFC Lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos at at The Ultimate Fighter Latin America 3 Finale in November. Previously to that, he won a second round submission win over late replacement Landon Vannata in July. Ferguson has won two out of his last four wins by a second round D’Arce choke and is currently riding a nine fight win streak in the UFC.
This event is headlined by a rematch against the UFC Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson. The event will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
