Jose Aldo (26-3) lost the UFC Featherweight title to Conor McGregor at UFC 194 in 2015 after holding the title for six years. Since then Aldo went on to defeat Frankie Edgar to regain the interim title and was later promoted back to the Featherweight Champion. He is recently coming off a TKO loss to Max Holloway, costing him the title. Jose Aldo had expressed an interest in fighting at UFC 217 but according to Combate, Lamas needed more time.
Ricardo Lamas (18-5) is coming off a first round TKO win over Jason Knight at UFC 214 this past July. Previously to that, Lamas had defeated Charles Oliveria by second round submission earning himself a performance of the night bonus. His last loss was to the now current Featherweight Champion Max Holloway back at UFC 199 in June last year.
This event is headlined by a Welterweight match between former champions Robbie Lawler and Rafael Dos Anjos. Also added to the card is another Welterweight bout between Santiago Ponzinibbio and Mike Perry.
