Albuquerque Police Department have said they are ‘actively’ seeking UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones for questioning regarding his possible involvement in a hit-and-run accident that happened early Sunday morning involving three cars. The hit-and-run which has been upgraded to a felony, carries a maximum penalty of three years in jail and fines.
According to the police report, a marijuana pipe with marijuana inside of it was found in the vehicle along with MMA paperwork from the state of Nevada with Jones name on. An off-duty police officer identified the man fleeing the scene as “Jonathan Jones the MMA fighter”, he stated that he saw Jones “Exit the Silver Buick and run up a dirt hill”.
After running a red light and colliding with another vehicle, witnesses at the scene stated that the suspect, “Slouched over and ran back to the vehicle grabbing a large hand full of cash”. They stated, “He shoved the cash into his pants and ran north jumping the fence into Terracita”.
The driver of a separate vehicle involved in the accident has been identified as a pregnant female in her 20’s and has been taken to the local hospital with a serious injury. The police report states she felt like “she was going to pass out”. Albuquerque PD Spokesman Tanner Tixier said, “We are currently following up with the victim to check on her health status”. He said, “We need to confirm the severity of the injuries before we file charges”. Tixier has since confirmed that the victim suffered a broken arm and the woman’s pregnancy was not affected by the accident.
Officers attempted to contact Jon Jones by telephone and at his residence sunday evening but were unsuccessful. The police department have also reached out to his lawyer but as of now have had no response. Charges have not been made against Jones at this current time.
The UFC have released a statement.
“We are aware that the Albuquerque Police Department is interested in speaking to Jon Jones regarding his possible involvement in a motor vehicle accident. We are in the process of gathering facts and will reserve further comment until more information is available.”
Jon Jones is scheduled to face Anthony Johnson in the main event at UFC 187 and defend his title. There has been no update on if the fight is still taking place as of yet.
