The Calgary Sun has reported that the UFC will return to Calgary, Canada July 28. There is currently no announcement on the main event but Jeremy Stephens will take on former Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo in the co-main event.
“We’ve been trying for the last few years, and because of a number of reasons we just couldn’t make the date happen,” said David Shaw, senior vice-president of international and content for the UFC. “It came down to the fact that we just needed to come. We needed to get back to Calgary.
“We’ve been doing three shows in Canada for the last few years, but to get back to Calgary is very important because we know there’s a huge fanbase. Our numbers, from a pay-per-view perspective, from a social media perspective, from a viewership perspective and even the number of bars and restaurants that show our fights, Alberta is a tier-one area and Calgary leads the way.”
Jeremy Stephens (28-14) is currently riding a three fight win streak with wins over Gilbert Melendez, Doo Ho Choi and most recently Josh Emmett. Both of his latest wins have resulted in KO/TKO stoppages in the second round with 18 of his total wins resulting in the same outcome.
Jose Aldo (26-4) is a former WEC and UFC Featherweight Champion, losing his title to Conor McGregor at UFC 194 in 2015. Since then, Aldo has gone on to defeat Frankie Edgar by unanimous decision but most recently fell short against the current Featherweight Champion Max Holloway on two occasions by TKO.
