The UFC have announced that UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier will defend his title against Volkan Oezdemir in the main event at UFC 220 taking place in Boston, Jan. 20.
Daniel Cormier (19-1-1) had lost the title when he suffered a loss to Jon Jones at UFC 214 but the result was later changed to a no contest. Cormier was awarded the UFC Light Heavyweight title once more after Jon Jones failed another drugs test leading him to be stripped of the title again. Daniel Cormier has only ever lost to Jon Jones and holds wins over Anthony Johnson, Anderson Silva and Alexander Gustafsson.
Volkan Oezdemir (15-1) is currently ranked No. 2 in the UFC Light Heavyweight rankings. He is currently coming off a three fight win streak since debuting in the UFC back in February 2017. Oezdemir holds the nickname ‘no time’ and has lived up to his name by knocking out his last two opponents within the first minute of the opening rounds.
Oezdemir had found himself in some trouble lately after he was arrested for a second degree felony charge as a result of an altercation with a man in a bar. That however hasn’t set him back and having climbed the Light Heavyweight rankings rather quickly, Oezdemir will now get his first shot at UFC gold.
