Dana White confirmed today on ESPN Sports Centre that Jose Aldo it out of the fight and it now will be Conor McGregor vs Chad Mendes for the Interim Featherweight Championship in the main event at UFC 189 at the MGM Las Vegas July 11th.
Reports of Jose Aldo’s rib injury came about last week and it was first reported that he suffered a broken rib. It was then confirmed by the UFC that he suffered a bruised rib and Aldo was cleared by doctors to go ahead with the fight.
Dana White stated the ” He’s (Jose Aldo) pulled out of five title fights… I don’t feel great about it, we spent a lot of money promoting this.
Conor McGregor also commented on the fight stating “Outcome will be the same. Mendes will be unconscious four minutes into the first round. Opponent doesn’t matter, it’s an illusion.
Conor McGregor has a MMA record of 17-2 and a UFC record of 5-0 with notable wins over Max Holloway, Diego Brandao and Dustin Poirier. McGregor’s latest win was via TKO punches over Dennis Siver at UFC Fight Night 69 this past January.
Chad Mendes has a MMA record of 17-2 and has won 3 out of his last four fights in the UFC. Mendes has notable wins over Nik Lents, Clay Guida and Cub Swanson. Mendes latest fight was with Ricardo Lamas where he won via TKO punches in Round 1 at UFC Fight Night 63 back in April.
