It has been confirmed that Nate Diaz has stepped in to face the UFC Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor in the main event at UFC 196 at the MGM in Las Vegas, March 5th. McGregor was expected to take on UFC Lightweight Champion Rafael Dos Anjos but it was reported today that he has suffered a foot injury that ruled him out of the fight. The bout against Nate Diaz will take place at Welterweight.
Many UFC fighters in the featherweight and Lightweight Division took to twitter throwing their names out their in hopes of a potential fight with Conor McGregor.
Conor McGregor (19-2) won the Featherweight title by knocking out long reining former champion Jose Aldo in 13 seconds after a long awaited build up to the bout at UFC 194 in December. Prior to winning the Featherweight title McGregor had expressed his desire to move up to Lightweight and become a two division champion. Conor McGregor will unfortunately not get his shot at the Lightweight Champion Rafael Dos Anjos in hopes to become the first UFC champion to hold and defend two belts from two different divisions.
Nate Diaz has a MMA record of 18-10 and a UFC record of 13-8. Diaz has competed in the Lightweight and Welterweight division. He hold notable wins over Jim Miller, Donald Cerrone, Gray Maynard, Takanori Gomi and Melvin Guillard. His latest win was a unanimous decision win over Michael Johnson at UFC on FOX 17 in December of 2015.
