Anthony Smith puts himself into title contention with a submission win over Volkan Oezdemir at UFC Moncton

Anthony Smith has been on a tear since making the move to the Light Heavyweight division, fighting three times in the space of just five months.

He has now successfully taking out the No. 2 ranked Light Heavyweight Volkan Oezdemir by third round submission at UFC Fight Night Moncton this past weekend. The win adds to his streak of three finishes, two coming via first round KO, putting him straight into title contention.

In his post fight octagon interview, Anthony Smith got to live the moment he had been dreaming of since he first started fighting at the age of 17. “Ive been chasing this dream. My career’s been up and down. I’ve gone through so much diversity and all I wanted was to stand in this octagon after a win and feel confident enough to ask Dana, Hunter Campbell and Mick Maynard one question. My name is Anthony Smith and I want a title shot.”

The former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones gave his opinion on Smith’s performance,

Daniel Cormier currently holds the UFC Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight titles but will be stripped of the 205lbs title when Jon Jones returns against Alexander Gustafsson in a rematch for the title at UFC 232.

There is no doubt Anthony Smith will be keeping a close eye on that bout as it is highly likely he will take on the winner. Smith said backstage during his backstage interview with FOX that it is Jon Jones he wants next. “I want Jon Jones, he’s the best to ever do it and I think that is the ultimate challenge for me.”
