Anderson Silva suspended for 12 Months & Nick Diaz fight changed to a no contest

The former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva had his hearing today with the Nevada State Athletic Commission on testing positive for twice for drostanolone metabolites ahead of his fight with Nick Diaz at UFC 183 and then after his fight night urine test. Silva then also tested positive for a second anabolic steroid, Androstane along with temzepam and oxazepam.

At the hearing we were joined by a number of classics songs, from Salt and Pepper’s ‘Lets talk about sex’ to R Kelly’s ‘Bump n Grind’ to Shaggy ‘It wasn’t me’,(yes I’m serious) but after all theatrics the NSAC came to a decision on what the punishment would be on ‘The Spider’.

The NSAC mentioned inconstancies with Silva’s defence as at one point they failed to provide evidence to their claims that his positive test was due to sexual performance drug. There was also problems with translation in answers Silva was given during the hearing which led to his manager Ed Soares chiming in to help.

In the end the NSAC decided to suspend Anderson Silva for one year, he gave up his win bonus $200,000, was fined 30% of his show money $600,000 and must provide a clean test to the commission. Silva’s contest at UFC 183 against Nick Diaz was also overturned to a no contest. The suspension was back dated to January 31st 2015 so Silva will be able to resume fighting from February 2016.
