First reported by Flocombat, a trilogy match between Alistair Overeem and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Fabricio Werdum is in the works for UFC 213, due to take place July 8.
The pair first met back in Pride back in 2006. Fabricio Werdum took away the win sinking in a Kimura in round two. The second time had a different outcome with the pair fighting it out to a decision in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grandprix quarter final. This time Alistair Overeem would take back a win.
Fabricio Werdum (21-6-1) is currently coming off a unanimous decision win over Travis Browne at UFC 203 last September. He was scheduled to Ben Rothwell at UFC 211 but the bout was scrapped due to Rothwell failing a drugs test. Previously to his recent win, Werdum has suffered a first round KO loss to Stipe Miocic at UFC 198 losing him the Heavyweight title. This had been his first title defence since wining the interim title and unifying the belts by beating Cain Velasquez at UFC 188.
Alistair Overeem (42-15-1) is coming off a third round KO win over Mark Hunt at UFC 209 in March. Previously to that he had also suffered a first round KO loss by the hands of the current Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic at UFC 203. This loss had stopped a four fight win streak with wins over Andrei Arlovski and Junior Dos Santos.
The pair have a long history dating back to Pride and Strikeforce. In this trilogy match one man will have the opportunity to go 2-1 against the other and possibly a land themselves a opportunity to fight for the title.
the UFC have not yet confirmed the news of this bout, stay tuned for further updates.
